Aside from the obvious reasons for making a trip to an island as remote as Shetland, I had another wonderful reason for the trek. My friend and colleague, Gudrun Johnston, had asked if I would photograph her new collection of knitting designs on her home turf. Long have I daydreamed of the mythical light in Shetland, so from a photographer’s perspective I was thrilled by the proposition.

Aside from the obvious perks of our location, Gudrun’s collection was fantastic, which made my job so enjoyable. We shot the book in one very full day (from pre-dawn to sunset in a Northern Latitude) and to our luck, the weather cooperated.

The green vest above was one of my favorite pieces of the day.

The collection has a great range of projects from small accessories to full garments (the beautiful cardigan below is knit with a lace-weight wool/silk blend) that I think is wonderfully edited.

All the patterns shown above (as well as some not pictured) are are included in Gudrun’s book which is available in print through her website. A digital version of the book is also available. Thanks for such a beautiful collection, Gudrun!
Beautiful shots and patterns! Love it!
It is a wonderful book. I have several self-published knitting books, and it is the most professional. No detail was neglected. I have several projects planned from this book, especially if Santa brings me some Quince and Co Lark. I hope to have Norie done before flying to the cold Midwest for the holidays.
You did a lovely job, as always, with the photography. I hope to see Shetland light in person someday myself.
Gorgeous! And I like these behind-the-scenes photos of photographer and models on Gudrun’s site: http://www.theshetlandtrader.com/blog/?p=816
LOVE LOVE LOVE how these shots are styled! Thank you for sharing such a beautiful collection, inspiring!
You manage to take my breath away, every time… and more than once today!
Congrats to you both.
::wistful sighs::
That’s all I’ve got…you’ve pretty much covered it, Jared…gorgeous photos (as always), and Gudrun’s pieces are stunning, too!
I have this book and the designs and photography are awesome!
I’m really loving this book. LOVE! And of course, your photos are magical.
You captured both the beauty of Shetland and Gudrun’s work perfectly. I know Shetland well (although I am not from there, my Mum lives there), I have been visiting regularly for about 16 years.
The book is stunning, and captures the simplicity, complexity and beauty of the island and it’s knitting well. Well done.
Every time I see the photos from this collection, I want to go out and buy the whole book and then knit everything in it–that’s the mark of good photography!
Beautiful collection and the photographs are lovely as expected
Where are the sheep? I thought sheep would be everywhere. (c:
Oh wow! You had me at that beautiful teal skirt! Gorgeous!
Beautiful photography and patterns.
These photos really are lovely. I can hardly believe you shot them all in one day. I know how difficult and lucky that is, as I do have some experience with photo shoots. What a great location and the knits are just fabulous!
